My pocket camera, a Canon PowerShot S70, is really a little too big for day-to-day use. It's a hefty, solid beast and has done sterling service since [livejournal.com profile] marypcb bought it for me in Wellington on the New Zealand leg of our honeymoon. More than four years later it's still taking excellent photographs - it just doesn't fit in a pocket.

Its replacement arrived at Christmas, courtesy of Mary, and is about a third of the size, in the shape of a tiny little Nikon Coolpix S550. The size belies the power - this is a 10 Mpixel camera with 5x optical zoom. Picture quality is excellent, and it takes SDHC cards for plenty of storage. The large screen on the back makes up for the lack of an optical viewfinder, and gives you a good idea of what image you're going to end up with.

One thing to note is that it's not a manual camera, but then for that I have the DSLR. This is most definitely a pocket point-and-shoot camera, just one with better than average optics and a good set of presets.

Looks like I've been assimilated into the Nikonborg...

I've had the same fun with my Fuji F50.

That is if I can pry it from my daughter's hands. She doesn't quite get the fact that it's Dad's camera...

I need to find a small camera to take on a long, light-weight packing trip through Italy, coming in '09. What did you think of the Nikon with the 10 MP sensor and the 18X optical zoom? It's larger than the S550, but still smaller than my D80.

Well, OK, the D80 is the size of two large gibbons; or at least it seems like it is. But often I have wondered about the utility of the extra-wide zoom range on this other Nikon, and wondered particularly about the quality of the optics for such a range.

I quite like the bridge camera format, the mid-sized devices with ultra-zoom. I used to use a Fuji like that (before I switched to the DSLR). They're a decent size, give you a lot of control, and usually have rather good quality glass.
