I cannot enthuse enough about The Phantom Tollbooth. And I agree that if sbisson hasn't already read it (see comments passim), it might really appeal to him.

Oh it's a lovely book - I had to get the recent reprint as I'd lost my copy.

In a similar vein I can recommend Gerald Durrell's The Talking Parcel and Julie Andrews' (yes, her!) The Last Of The Really Great Wangdoodles.
