After all these years...

...they actually seem to have started work on Crossrail...

It's started!

...at least according to this hoarding in Soho Square.

I suspect its the start of surveying the ground for the Tottenham Court Road station extension

Yes, and there's another one just round the corner in Carlisle Street (outside Private Eye's office). They both seem to have drills, so I suspect they're taking some core samples to see just what's underneath Soho before they have to start tunnelling.

Lots of Betamax porn tapes and old copies of Private Eye.

And patisserie.

(I speak as one wqho used to visit his godfather's premises on Brewer Street. If you look in the right place, you can still find a stone door lintel with the name 'Floris' on.)

Meanwhile, the Second Avenue Subway is still under consideration in New York City -- as it has been intermittently since at least the 1930s.

They've got signs up for a crossrail construction site on the middle island of the big roundabout under the Westway, where Marylebone Road becomes Harrow Road:

Since it will eventually be coming out more or less opposite my house I suppose I shouldn't be surprised.
