A spoof 80s pop video from his latest Drew Barrymore romcom.

For those of us who lived through Top of the Pops in the 80s...

About equal parts Human League and Wham, I thought. Although the sequences of Grant with his jacket sleeves rolled up were very clearly modelled on the post-Wham George Michael, which is of course All Wrong for the ostensible year of 1984 in which this video was shot.

(Actually, I can't remember whether Wham existed as far back as 1984, either. So that might be another wrongness.)

Wikipedia knows all: Their first single was released in June of '82; the albums were released in '82, '84 and '86.

It just shows, they don't make 'em like they used to. Oh, wait.

Ah the Simmons syndrums, the steinberger headless bass, the pointy headstock guitar (currently a Kramer, may have been back then too!), the D50 (I would have thought a DX7 should have been in there too), the Duran Duran haircuts, the ABC/HumanLeague/PowerStation band, the "Gold" from Spandau Ballet, the backdrop from Robert Palmer, the AHA moments and obviously dollops of Wham since that's the basic inspiration for his character etc. etc.

Pleasant, but I don't think it would have top 20'd in the mid 1980s ... :-)

Thanks Simon for the vid!
