Coo, look at all those Extensions...

Firefox extensions are very useful indeed - adding lots of extra functions to the browser. They're often small, quick to install, and simple to use. I've got a lot installed, and use FEBE to backup and manage them all. It also produces a formatted list of what you've installed so far.

After I ran today's extension backup, I took the list, tidied it up a little, and stuck it behind a cut tag...

Here's a nice long list of all the Firefox extensions I use (with some links).

I've also added a quick star rating, and a review/description

Of the ones on your list, my faves are DownThemAll, TabMixPlus and de.icio.us. I use IE View Lite rather than IE View, but it is a lifesaver at work where I have no choice but to use IE for many of our intranet sites. I didn't like Google Browser Sync, and just uninstalled it recently. There are a whole bunch which are just always there, and seem less like an extension, but a seamless part of the browsing experience, McAfee Site Advisor, FoxClocks, Auto Copy, Stylish. Plus the 2 email notifiers, Gmail Notifier and Yahoo Mail Notifier. Firebug and Web Developer are great when I'm putting together a new web page. Finally, ProxyButton. I have to use a proxy at work, don't at home, swapping with just a single button click is a so much more convenient.

I'm using AdBlock Plus, and as with [livejournal.com profile] cobrabay have Gmail Notifier installed.

The only ones I'm using at the moment are URL Link and JustBlogIt. I was using the venerable Tabbrowser Extension, but the only feature I made much use of, undo close tab, is now (finally!) built-in.

TargetAlert will warn you with a little icon if a link you're about to click on is a mailto, or a PDF, or will open a new window, or whatever.

Posted my favorite a couple of weeks ago (http://meta.ath0.com/articles/2007/02/02/firefox-hint).

No HTML Validator ? (Marc Gueury's)
It even does real DTD-based validation these days.

The link you gave for Interclue needs a pwd...

[identity profile] sethop.livejournal.com 2007-02-17 01:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi Natalief, that's because we're still nominally in closed beta. We'll probably go into open beta in about a week. The addon is now more or less ready for primetime, it's been more the business and marketing and documentation side of things (read, the bits none of us are really any good at), that's been keeping us from releasing it lately. Simon's been beta testing it for us, it's great that he rates it as one of his top 3 extensions! We've put a lot of hard work into Interclue, and we intend to keep on doing so.

[identity profile] sethop.livejournal.com 2007-05-17 08:32 am (UTC)(link)
Hi Natalief, - just to let you know, we're open to the public now. Check it out at interclue.com

Cool. I don't use Firefox any more, though, and the browser that I do use (Camino, Mac) does not seem to be on the list for signing up for email info.

[identity profile] sethop.livejournal.com 2007-05-17 10:55 am (UTC)(link)
We *might* go after Camino, but no guarantees. Interclue is mostly comprised of javascript (600k+ of it when uncompressed) so it doesn't rely on the XUL platform the way most firefox addons do (Camino doesn't use XUL). We might add another category - "others", for people to be notified if we launch our addon for camino, maxthon, avant, etc (It already works in Flock, or did when we last tested it)

Cheers,
Seth.

Adblock, FlashBlock, Add Bookmark Here, Scrapbook (possibly, I never seem to make use of the pages I've scrapbooked).

[identity profile] vicarage.livejournal.com 2007-02-17 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
Flashblock is great for delaying flash startup

[identity profile] nalsa.livejournal.com 2007-02-17 11:14 am (UTC)(link)
I recently came across UnPlug, which may technically constitute naughty software but on the other hand may not. I'm not yet sure how much use it will get, though.

[identity profile] ccomley.livejournal.com 2007-02-17 01:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh - cute. I've been asked more than once if embedded videos can be saved.

Actually the last person who asked wanted me to say "no" - coz he was trying to get his lady to star in a naughty vid for friends only and wanted to be assured it couldn't go any further. I'm glad I told him not to make that assumption. :-)

[identity profile] tanais.livejournal.com 2007-02-17 12:07 pm (UTC)(link)
No plug ins (I don's use a browser in any meaningful way to warrant them) but I swear by a userContent.css (with added flash removal) sitting in my /chrome/ folder which is I think elegant...

I do however remember the sanctimonious asshole 'journalist' cabal on CiX years ago giving me shit for adblocking... now it seems quite normal. Acceptable even.

The only two I'd suggest would be Chris Pederick's Web Developer and Grease Monkey*. I find Web Developer invaluable when I'm tarting about writing HTML. I tend not to notice Grease Monkey much until it's not there. When I use LJ without it (as I do sometimes at work) I wonder where the functionality has gone..

*The most useful scripts, for me, being Instant Comment and Anonymous Posting Warning.

Well there's nothing in that lot that appeals to me... but that's the joy - I dont' have my browser using up RAM with loads of tools I have no use for.

One point that's very important to note about Firefox in general and extensions in specific, is the ease with which you can lift your entire config, preferences and settings, extensions and their preferences and settings, saved passwords, form-fill data, etc., etc., and take it to a new user profile or an entirely new machine.

THIS is how applications should be built.

[identity profile] ccomley.livejournal.com 2007-02-17 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh what I *do* use?

Gmail notifier, Adblock, SiteAdvisor* and ChatZillz.

* evaluating to see if I should put it on the browser of the more accident-prone and click-happy users.

[identity profile] twinfair.livejournal.com 2007-02-17 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks to [personal profile] cobrabay, I too have Autocopy which is absolutely fab but you don't seem to have. Only problem is when NOT in Firefox, I often forget the functionality is not there. FEBE, McAfee site advisor and Foxclocks are great.

Thanks for mentioning BlueOrganizer!

Since you blog about books, consider putting a BlueBadge on your blog to showcase your book picks. You can see one on adaptiveblue.com.

Let me know if you need help setting it up :)
