After all, anything can be automated.

Even something as self-centred as egosurfing. Yes, you can now "Know Your Place", as egosurf.org's tagline so neatly puts it, at just the click of a button. No more typing your name into Google or Yahoo!, or even MSN, del.icio.us or Technorati.

Fill in your name, some appropriate URLs, and you can quickly see just what the web thinks (or doesn't think) of you.

Ever the happy guinea pig, I tried it out.

Apparently my egopoints (whatever meaningless number they are) are:

enginerankingego points
google.com1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th7899
yahoo.com1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 8th, and 9th8298
msn.com1st, 2nd, and 3rd2692
del.icio.us2nd, 3rd, and 6th2362
technorati.com7th, 8th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th7599

A nifty tool, and quite fun watching it pop up the results - the whole thing is a fairly decent piece of AJAX code.

A mere 3911 points on Google. Clearly I must track down the other Andrew Ducker's and destroy them all!

Did you hear the BBC 7 show The Spaceship last year? It had a clone character Clive 55 who eventually justified being just called "Clive".

It's slightly odd. It thinks I'm sixth on Google when I'm fourth, or third if you surround me in quotes.

Anything you can specify can be automated. Unfortunately, there are things we'd like a machine to do that we can't specify. (Never mind the things that only interest pure mathematicians, like proving theorems. Consider the problem of enumerating all real numbers. Even a Turing machine can't do that.)

E.g. give a formal specification for spam...turn it into code and prove it correct...solve the halting problem.

Perhaps I should have put the smiley in after all...

Sadly I only *total* 869 ... am I a non-entity or what? (and only 47th on Google). Or maybe I just need to change my name to Homer P. Duckpuddle...

Some work there to be done, I think. I could put more pages into the "your blog and stuff" fields.

8631 on google using "stephen savitzky, steve savitzky" looking for links to "thestarport.com, thestarport.org, places.to, mdlbear.livejournal.com, livejournal.com/~mdlbear". Doesn't appear to have looked anyplace else.

Well, I tried it, and discovered it really does make a difference how many sites you list. If I list just NewsWireless.net I get a modest 6,000 odd. Stuff in all the things I write for, and it gets hotter, with the graphical tachometer showing redline in a couple of places!

www.kewney.co.uk/pix/egosurf/ego.jpg shows the ghastly 'truth' about someone's ego. Who is this Guy Kewney anyway...

I'm not particularly impressed. If I put my name (andrew adams, no quotes or anything) into Google, my web page at work is the first hit that comes up, but egosurf.com gives google.com a "zero score" for my name and various synonyms for my home page.
