More micromanufactured goodness, this time a guitar that's only 10 micrometers long...

" The guitar has six strings, each string about 50 nanometers wide, the width of about 100 atoms ... For comparison, the diameter of a human hair is about 200 micrometers, or 200,000 nanometers"

Now, I'd love to see someone play "Stairway to Heaven" on that!

Looks hard to tune.

... I haven't read the article, so this is purely my first thoughts! ...

... no, if each string is 50 nanometers wide, then they are the same gauge and tuning the guitar to have the top string two octaves above the bottom will bend that guitar totally ... plus I bet the frets wouldn't be in the right place!

And let's think what the "wavelength" on those strings would be. There are simple formula for working out the frequence of a string based on length, tension and cross-sectional area (though it does require knowing the co-efficient of elasticity I'd guess ...) so to get that 10 micrometre string to vibrate at 440Hz ... er, my brain, she explodeth! :-)
