[livejournal.com profile] codepope (and originally [livejournal.com profile] abiw) just pointed out the new personalised stamp service from the Royal Mail. Just upload a digital image, and for £14.95 you'll get a book of stamps back containing your image.

It's not quite as good an idea as it seems - you need to pair it with one of their "Smilers" range, but it's a start...

Well, it's close to printing money. Stamps have value and need to be validatable...

The fact that they have the on demand technology to print a fraud protected stamp with an adhoc image is impressive, and opens up all sorts of possibilities, including if you think further... personalised money.

It's going to screw up the hobbyist stamp collectors, isn't it!

They also plan stamps without the queen's head on to attract the anti-royalist market, and round stamps and ones with holes in the middle to attract the daft. Do I detect an expensive set of image consultants?

Hmm. How much do *you* pay for 20 first class stamps?
