Actually, it's more that I was going to leave the reveal for the upcoming review.

As it is, it's "The Apocalypse Door" by J.D. Macdonald.

Oh shucks. I knew the answer but you blurted it out before I had a chance. We bought and read it after reading how much Kate and Chad liked it in their booklogs. Jim MacDonald says there's a sequel RSN.
