Fundamental beliefs

In an ongoing flamewar in rec.arts.sf.written, Charlie Stross said one thing that neatly encapsulates pretty much everything I believe:

"And what if you're sharing that universe with other people?"

Thanks Charlie.

Ah, was this the thread about (and involving) Eric S Raymond? [I've dropped out of reading r.a.sf.w again, but googled to see what was going on.] I've owned a paper copy of the Jargon File for years and on the basis of it assumed ESR was a pretty neat guy. Alas, the more I find out about him, the clearer it becomes that he's actually a raving right-wing looney...

[Should you be in any doubt, read ESR's Blog.]

I felt the same. Once I met him the first time, I quickly changed my mind. He's a (and I choose my phrase carefully) religious libertarian. He has a tendency to fixate on just one thing ("Microsoft bad", "Capitalism good"), and then to shoot off to extremes...

And yes, it was that thread. I rather liked China's response...
