After Tangmere earlier this week, Putney seems to be in something of a Southern Railway time warp, as today the Venice Simplon Orient Express came through the cutting on its way to Oxford.

The special was hauled by 35028 Clan Line, a Merchant Navy class Pacific. She's a big locomotive, powerful enough to haul a full rake of pullman coaches - and a freewheeling diesel locomotive (needed for the section from Didcot to Oxford which isn't rated for mainline steam) - and makes an impressive site as she pulls up the climb from Wandsworth Town, on the run out of London towards Reading and the West.

Old And Older

Clan Line passes a South West Train electric, two generations of Southern rail...

Orient Expression

Full steam ahead through the Putney cutting, with a long rake of pullmans behind.

Round The Curve

Reflecting the bridges in the shine of a polished boiler, Clan Line heads into the Putney straight. Spot the diesel trailer car!

Throttle Up

And away it goes, shrouded in steam and smoke through the three Putney bridges.

Into the West.

Well, at least into the Great Western!
