After 40 years of deep sea work, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution's research submarine Alvin is about to be retired...

With more than 4000 dives in its log book, Alvin is perhaps best known for the 1977 discovery of hydrothermal vents and the chemosynthetic life that surrounds the deep sea hot water streams, and for helping to deliver some of the best evidence for continental drift. It also sent back the first pictures of the sunken Titanic - making Alvin a Thunderbird 4 for the National Geographic reader.

Let's hope its successor does as much good science.
